Values

  • Affordability

Tax revenue is derived from commercial and residential taxpayers. As a small business owner and resident, I pay for both.

I will align the basic principle of value for money spent. Most Calgarians feel they do not receive the relative value in services and investments for the money they pay in taxes and living expenses. The core action of the city council is to provide basic services at the best prices.

  • Housing

Accessible Housing is top-of-mind across the country.

We have young people coming of age in communities that they can no longer afford to live in. It’s happening everywhere. We must right this wrong.

I live in a 1956 townhouse built with the support of the City of Calgary, in partnership with other levels of government under the Veterans Land Act to ensure that our military families in the early post-war years had a place to call home. Our grandparents were able to do this work. We can do it too.

  • Thoughtful Redevelopment

Redevelopment in Ward 9 must respect the historic value of these communities.

We are discussing some of the oldest neighbourhoods in the city, where many Calgarians have lived for decades, if not generations. The neon signs of International Avenue and the sandstone and brick buildings of 9th Avenue represent, in a small but meaningful way, the unique spirit of our communities and our city.

Density does not have to be the enemy of these historic places so long as we protect the essence of these areas throughout the process.

  • Communication

Communication is the keystone of an effective City Councillor. It is important to speak to Calgarians as though they can understand and add value to the discussion. That means being transparent about expenses and the issues at hand.

The work ahead will require all of those who wish to pay attention and engage, so we must create a collaborative environment for them to do so.

  • Safety

It is the right of every Calgarian to feel safe. To ride our transit and walk our streets without fear or regular exposure to extreme behaviour.

Each community has unique safety needs, and we should collaborate with them to produce strategies that are effective for everyone.

  • Independent Candidate

For the first time, political parties and slates of candidates will be invited to participate in Calgary’s municipal election.

Our community is best served by someone singularly focused on meeting those needs. I prefer to carry with me the voices of the community, not a party leader or special interest group.

I am running as an independent candidate.
